Chris Whealing, Kilbraur Windfarm, Sutherland
West Coast Energy identified the area around Kilbraur Hill as
having wind farm potential. Following an initial approach, Chris
Wheeling factor for the Sutherland Estate, fully embraced the
opportunity to generate sustainable electricity, and welcomed the
extra revenue stream. He was keen to use it to re-invest in the
running of the wider Estate.
After extensive consultation with Scottish National Heritage
over ornithological issues and Historic Scotland over archaeology
issues, West Coast Energy secured permission from the Highland
Council for the 47.5 MW scheme. A key element in gaining approval
was the adoption of an extensive Conservation Management Plan Area
for the wind farm vicinity. The Kilbraur project was developed in
association with - and is now operated by - Falck Renewables, one
of the UK's largest renewable energy generators. The turbines
started exporting electricity in October 2008 and have delivered
attractive returns to the Sutherland Estate, the neighbourhood
crofting group as well as local co-operative members.
Chris Wheeling comments: "Although the process of getting the
wind farm into operation has often been long and complicated, West
Coast Energy's expert team helped every step of the way. The fiscal
and environmental benefits of the scheme are obvious to all. In a
period of prolonged recession the diversification of the estate's
traditional enterprises has ensured employment and generated income
for the future management of the estate."
